  REQUIREMENTS

This section covers the preparation, materials, services and equipment required in conjunction with the application of a masonry stain on above grade, vertical, exterior exposed surfaces of new and existing brick masonry.

SUBMITTALS

Submit under provisions – Submittals

Product Specification Data:
Submit manufacturers’ technical literature, specifications and application instructions for the specified concrete and masonry stain material for architect’s approval.

Applicator Qualifications:
Submit certification stating applicator has a minimum of three (3) year’s experience using the specified product. Provide a list of several most recently completed projects where the specified material was used. Include the project name, location, architect and method of application.

Environmental Regulations:
Submit certification stating the masonry stain material to be applied is in compliance with federal, provincial and local environmental Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) regulations.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

Manufacturer:
A firm no less than ten (10) year’s experience in manufacturing the products specified in this section.

Applicator Qualification:
A firm with no less than three (3) year’s experience in the application of the products specified in this section. In addition, applicator must state the intended use of the proper application equipment and that it has been well-maintained.

Mock-Up:

  • Apply masonry stain per manufacturer’s application instructions as directed by the architect to substrate material on the building.

  • After sample treatment has cured in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations, verify the substrate is coated with sufficient stain material to produce the desired appearance and colour.

  • Obtain architect and/or project owner approval of coverage appearance and colour prior to full-scale application. This mock-up will become the standard of quality.

PRODUCT DELIVERY

Material Delivery:
Deliver materials to the job site in original sealed containers, clearly marked with manufacturer’s name, brand name and type of material and colour, or colour formula. Verify the product matches that of the original sample applied on the mock-up wall.

Storage and Protection:
Store materials inside if possible, away from sparks or open flame. Store in a secure area to avoid tempering and contamination. Water-based materials must be kept from freezing. Store and handle according to manufacturers written instructions.

PROJECT CONDITIONS

Surface preparation:
Surface must be free of cracks, dirt, oils, paint, or other contaminations which may effect the appearance or performance of the masonry stain material. Substrate previously chemical/acid washed must be neutralized.

Environmental Requirements:

  • Air and substrate temperature must be above 25 degrees Fahrenheit or below 110 degrees Fahrenheit unless otherwise specified by manufacturer.

  • Do not proceed with application if the substrate is wet or contains frozen water or if rain is likely within 4 hours.

Protections:

  • Do not permit mist (if spraying) or liquid to drift onto surrounding properties.

SCHEDULING

  • Schedule application of masonry with construction manager.

  • The contractor and applicator shall jointly and severally warrant masonry stain material against failure in material and workmanship for a period of twenty-five (25) years from the date of application.

MANUFACTURER

  • Nawkaw Corporation – NECT-90 Nawkaw Emulsion colour Treatment or equivalent.

MATERIALS

General:
NECT-90 NAWKAW EMULSION colour TREATMENT is a hydrous, multiple polymer formulation of resin solids, colour pigments which is light fast, UV resistant, penetrating, aspiratory, quick-drying, mold, fungus and mildew resistant.

  • Verify that all surfaces are structurally sound, clean, dry, fully cured for at least twenty-one (21) days and free from dust, or from release agents, oil grease, efflorescence, scale or other foreign materials which may inhibit the bond of the emulsion to the masonry. Neutralize the pH level of the masonry.

  • Verify that all masonry that is cracked or damaged has been replaced prior to application of emulsion. Shall ensure that stained surfaces are not exposed to rain for at least 24 hours. All manufacturers’ recommendations and procedures shall be strictly adhered to.

  • Custom blend emulsion to match masonry on remainder of existing building as recommended by the manufacturer, utilizing Nawkaw Emulsion colour. Treatment (NECT-90) as manufactured by Nawkaw Corporation (1-905-542-7893) or approved equal.

  • After contractor is satisfied with colour match, a sample panel is to be produced for review and approval by architects prior to completion of work.

  • When a spray application, mask off all surfaces not intended to receive colouring, utilizing tape approved by the manufacturer which will prevent bleeding of colour for the entire wall surface. Brick by brick application will not require masking. colour application type to be determined by Nawkaw Corporation.

  • Hand apply colouring to each masonry unit to ensure precise application in order to achieve a uniform blending of colouring for the entire wall.

  • Clean all surfaces inadvertently affected by colour with a cleaning product, which will not damage or discolour the surface.

EXAMINATION

Verify the following:

  • The required joint sealant has been installed.

  • New masonry and mortar has cured a minimum of twenty-one (21) days.

  • Surface to be treated is clean, dry and contains no frozen water.

  • Environmental conditions are appropriate for application.

PROTECTION

Protection:

  • Protect shrubs, metal, wood trim, glass, asphalt and other building hardware during application from over spray.

  • Do not permit mist (if spraying) or liquid to drift onto surrounding properties or parking lots.

FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

After masonry stain has cured (minimum of 12 hours) verify colour uniformity. Recoat any area that is unacceptable.

CLEANING

At completion, remove from the jobsite, all excess materials, debris, and waste resulting from this work. Dispose of containers according to state, provincial and local governmental regulations.
